Digitizing a Visual Installation

students examining flags at the COVID memorial

Every flag planted in artist Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg’s installation “In America: Remember” represented an individual in the United States who died from COVID-19. A team led by 莎拉·瓦格纳, professor of anthropology in the Columbian College of 艺术 and Sciences, geolocated flags with personal dedications written by family or friends of the deceased in order to bring the visual art into the digital space. The team included five student researchers who combed through the rows of flags daily and photographed every personalized flag they saw to add to the digital collection.
